phpmyadmin not working: mysqli extension is missing

After installing phpmyadmin, I get this when I try to visit localhost/phpmyadmin/

The mysqli extension is missing. Please check your PHP configuration. See our documentation for more information.

Note that I declined to use the default phpmyadmin config when prompted during installation
